What does strengths-based coaching actually mean?
How VIA character strengths can support reflection without labelling a child or pretending every difficulty is positive.
By Trevor Hunt · Educator, coach and researcher-practitioner · Updated September 2026Strengths-based coaching notices capacities, resources and successful exceptions alongside difficulties. VIA offers a language for 24 character strengths, but a profile is a conversation starter—not a permanent label, ranking or diagnosis.
Strengths are more than compliments
Useful strengths work connects a quality to real examples: when it appeared, how it helped and what conditions allowed it to be used.
Context and balance matter
A strength can be underused, overused or poorly matched to a situation. Curiosity may be helpful in learning and less helpful when it delays a necessary decision. The goal is wise use, not maximum use.
Connect strengths to direction
A list becomes useful when a young person links strengths with relationships, challenges, values and a meaningful next step.
